Valentine Day is a great time to focus on loved ones and why should your pooch not also share the day? Researching products and ingredients that I can use for The Doggy-Deli is very important when it comes to baking the best treats possible. 

Running The Doggy-Deli Over the past 12 months Cleo and I have experimented with many different recipes working hard to create a delicious and nutritious product; a product that will sustain its freshness for a reasonable amount of time.  I found out soon enough that this would be one of the biggest challenges I would face baking all natural dog treats.  How do you preserve a product without adding actual preservatives?  What’s the best way to prevent mould?  Does packaging play a part in shelf life?  These are all questions that I’ve been faced with throughout this process, and luckily I’ve found some answers…

The first thing that I needed to do was to research natural preservatives.  Thanks to the internet I found that honey, cinnamon, sage, rosemary and cloves are all ingredients I can use to preserve my treats.  I’m currently baking with honey and cinnamon to test this theory, as I thought they would be the most appealing ingredients to add to each of my four recipes. The feedback I am receiving from people like Linda Lusardi has been incredibly positive.

With all natural dog treats, mould is a definite concern.  I understand that as a customer if you are paying for a product the last thing you want after a couple of days is to notice mould on any treats. I have successfully come up with a list of ingredients that are guaranteed to produce NO mould at all. By leaving out yeast this is a problem we do not have to suffer with.  We have found that if you store the treats in an open plastic bag or a closed tin you will have no problems for up to 3 week. The natural preservatives also help, but I learned that the cooling process would also play a key role in extending the shelf life of my product.  I now cool the treats in a dry cool area for 24-48 hours before packaging, eliminating excess moisture for optimum dryness.

I’m fortunate in the packaging department, as my treats are packaged in a specially designed and exclusively created plastic type biscuit bag.

The Doggy-Deli creates and sells the very popular biscuits, cakes and cupcakes but we are now also creating, baking and selling dinners too.

Each dinner will be created here at The Doggy-Deli and will only ever use Organic ingredients, herbs, lean meats, fish, high-quality vegetable oils, yoghurt and other safe products.

We will be delivering these dinners in containers you will be able to use either in a microwave to warm up slightly or to give at room temperature. (dogs generally do not like warm/hot dinners).

• Spring Vegetable dinner bowl-containing fresh vegetables, Oats and other delectable ingredients
• Fish for Fifi-A whole fish fillet, rice, vegetables and fresh herbs

• Lilly`s feast-beef heart, potatoes, carrots, Chinese leaf and fresh spinach. 
• Willow`s weight watchers meal-lean beef, safflower oil, celery, cooked bran low fat yoghurt and herbs.

Dinner of the week recipe

Each week I will be giving you a 100% The Doggy-Deli dinner recipe and this week it is.......Bobby`s Pasta Bowl.

This pasta has been specifically created and tested to suit a Dog`s diet. If your dog has an issue with egg then you can use other binding ingredients like soya milk as an alternative.

Ingredients
9oz Minced meat(preferably Turkey). Please choose minced meat you would eat yourself-lean.
1oz Organic Oats
1 egg or binding substitute
1 Courgette
1/2 bunch of Oregano
Oil for frying preferably Olive Oil
5oz cooked spaghetti (whole grain/wheat)
3 fl oz Organic tomato juice.

Method
Mix the minced Turkey with the porridge oats and binding ingredient. Finely grate the courgette and then add to the mix. Strip the leaves of the oregano off the stalks and knead them into the meat mixture. Roll the mixture into mouth sized meat balls and fry slowly until cooked all the way through.
Cut the spaghetti into small pieces and mix with the tomato juice. Then add the meat balls.

Tried and Tested

After researching safe "Doggy Chocolate" it became apparent to me how many types of biscuits I could actually do.
We already do the biscuits that are either drizzled or coated with safe "The Doggy-Deli Chocolate" but now dum, dum, dum.......we do gorgeous biscuits that have safe chocolate chips inside too.

I have had many questions asking me "how safe our chocolate actually is" well I can tell you it is 110% safe. It contains NO cocoa solids which causes a number of damaging conditions in dogs and NO sugar.

It is however according to my dog very very tasty. :))))))))
