Dried Dog Foods-A review of Wagg dried dog food.

After spending a lot of time writing blogs I obviously also do a lot of research into different products and services. Recently I have been researching and reviewing dried dog foods and look extremely closely at the list of ingredients added to these products.

Yesterday on this blog I was looking at EC permitted colours and the longevity of these once consumed by your dog. I was shocked to learn about illnesses and even deaths in some cases.

Wagg dried dog foods is the latest food I have been asked to review. For me to review any dog food it needs to pass a number of tests before it even gets close to my dogs mouth.
Firstly when given the bag of Wagg Complete Worker Chicken and Vegetables dog food was to look closely at the labelling and packaging. In the ingredients it states that Wheat is the first ingredient not unlike other dried dog foods but then it does go onto meats, in this case "Meat Meal".

So what is meat meal? For one there is no such thing as human grade meat meal. Fact. This is because meat meal is never produced for human consumption. This however does not mean though that everything labelled "Meat meal" is of low quality. It is difficult to say because by law dog foods do not need to say what quality there meats actually are. Wagg states that their meat is human grade quality but this does not include the ingredient-Meat meal it only includes the meats that are added. If an ingredient list includes "Chicken meal" it could be from high quality de-boned chicken breasts or from old battery hens with little muscle or quality meat. Unfortunately for us Wagg chooses not to say, although it does include it as their sixth ingredient. A good tool to use is look at Ash in ingredients, if the ash content is quite low then the proportion of bone to meat is also low. In this case it is 8.5%. Quite high.

Wagg says on their web site "we do not use any artificial colours or flavours in their dog foods and in their complete dried dog foods the meat is of human grade". All 4% of it in this case.

For me to open the bag and give it to my dog Wagg need to make their labelling a lot clearer and remove the meat meal from their products. Then and only then will my dog actually try it!!

Wagg Dog Treat Review

I am always a little dubious when a kind friend brings round dog treats for my cross collie/German Shepard as she does from time to time have a sensitive stomach.

My friend Amy who knows my dog extremely well brought around "Wagg dog treats" for sensitive stomachs so I thought I would give it a go. I first looked at the bag and like I normally do examined the list of ingredients and looked closely at what additives, colours or other needless things were hiding in there? I didn`t know a lot about Wagg at the time so I was shocked and pleasantly surprised to see that Wagg do not add any artificial colours, flavours or sugar!! Yes I was shocked too.

The next test was for my dog who was wagging her tail every time I made a noise with the bag and instantly knew there was a surprise for her. I opened the bag and although smelly she instantly knew it was treat time. I love it when my dog is excited about food and I love it even more when I know what I am giving her is not just tasty but more importantly free from rubbish!!

I gave her one and unlike other times when she would have treats she didn`t drop it on the floor and do the smell test instead she instantly chewed and swollowed salavating for the next one. Success can be measured in many ways but for me and my dog its toilet time and I am pleased to inform you that everything was fine. I intend to stay on Wagg now and can be re-assured every time she has a treat from Wagg it contains no artificial colours, additives or sugars.

Keep Fit and Healthy in 2012

In 2012 I want to pinpoint specific treats for specific ailments or illnesses. So here goes;

A Fresh alternative to sugary additive products you find in some large pet stores we have our "Breeze" a light dumpling shaped starter. This is very low in fat and is a lovely light snack.

If your dogs lacks that glossy coat then our exclusive "Sparkle treats" really are for you. Made with apples, banana, oats and lecithin granules Sparkle treats make your dogs coat look healthy and glossy.

Like our other weight watching items "Doggy-Deli Diet" allows your dog to still enjoy treats but assist with shedding the weight. Made with loin beef, celery, bean sprouts, cooked bran and low fat yoghurt these treats will have your dog eager to get to that park.

Teeth and gums have always been an issue for dog owners and trying to keep them healthy and clean can sometimes be a chore. We have developed "Gummy Trouble" made with sunflower seeds, oats, rapeseed oil, skimmed milk and chicken stock. These healthy treats will have those teeth sparkling.

Does your dog have wind? Then our new "Windy Pops" might just be what you are looking for. With gluten free flour, skimmed milk and parsley these treats with stop your lovely dog blushing in his bed.

New 2012 products

You all may have been celebrating Christmas but I have been researching, creating and baking brand new exclusive items just for you, ready for 2012.

Said to be a healthy mood food for your dog Bananas are first on the list for 2012. Banana Chips are our brand new product. A healthy low fat snack made with banana, organic flour (gluten free if requested) and oats these have gone down a treat with the pack of dogs they have been tested on.

I wanted to find an alternative to meat and stumbled upon Vegetable Crackers. These gorgeous little nibbles are made with courgette, carrot and other safe selected ingredients. With a golden glow these tasty little treats have gone down a storm!!

Our next 2012 treat are the sausage meat snacks. These I like to think are for when your dog has a play date and wants to impress his or her peers. Made with Oregano leaves, sausage meat and breadcrumbs they are sure to go down a treat.

Honey biscuits are for those chilling out sitting in front of the TV kind of biscuits. Made with Organic oats, Organic honey and other selected ingredients you may just find yourself having one too.

Please do have a look at our full range of biscuits, treats and meals by simply clicking on the specific headline on the right hand side. xx

The Doggy-Deli

It`s important for 2012 to share some details with you in regards to The Doggy-Deli and how we make our products not just taste as good as they do but also share some of the secrets too.

The Doggy-Deli only ever uses the same cuts of meat you would eat yourself. Unlike some companies adding bits of head, feet and tail we do not. We never will. We add the same meat to The Doggy-Deli products as I hope are added to the products I eat and you too.

We do not use any harmful chemicals whether to enhance flavours, colours or to preserve the product. We use ingredients like Rosemary known to be a natural preservative. The Doggy-Deli only ever uses natural organic ingredients. We standby this promise and always will.

Sugars are never needed in dog food or treats. Dogs do not need sugar in order to survive or stay healthy. In fact sugar is bad for a dog and has been the root of many illnesses and in extreme cases even death (if used regularly). We here at The Doggy-Deli will never use sugar in any of our products.

Our chocolate coated biscuits are made from dog chocolate and not from human chocolate. The dog chocolate we use contains no sugar and we ourselves do not add any. There is no need.

So there you go a few little secrets and information to share with sceptics. The Doggy-Deli is here to offer what a lot of the bigger money making companies choose no to-Chemical free, sugar free, additive free ingredients.

Meanings behind the Label.......

Meat and animal derivatives; Your guess was as good as mine until I did a bit of digging. Shocked was a little understatement. The term; Meat and animal derivatives basically means that the meat in your dog food can actually by law be sourced from literally any animal. ANY. So in theory your dog could be eating a horse, cow, pig, rat or giraffe.

The choice of animal though is one thing but the part of the animal it comes from is just as shocking. We don`t want to eat things like an animals head, feet or guts but guess what if we don`t then your dogs will!! I know shocking isn`t it.

Manufacturers choose this method for one reason and one reason only. It`s cheap. what`s worse though is that some manufacturers get bags of "meat" delivered to them at the factory and even they don`t really know what`s inside so when they get another delivery of "meat" it could literally be from a completely different animal.

If your animal is allergic to one type of protein you may not know what exact protein is inside, at the end of the day the manufacturers don`t.

Shocked at Pets at Home Products

Today I went into the #1 UK pet store "Pets at home" to look for inspiration ready for 2012. I looked at their own brands and also a long list of the more well known designer brands of dog foods and treats.

What surprised me most though on my shopping trip was the long list of ingredients both on Pets at home products and the designer brands. The ingredients included the familiar; wheat, animal products, fats and oils but what did concern me was the lesser known E320 and E321?? I decided there and then that I would research these in more detail and report my findings to you. Here is what I found;

Firstly lets look at Artificial colours; Colours added to dogs dried foods and treats are there to make the product more appealing to the buyer of the food and not the dog. We as humans have 7 times more proportions of cone cells which in real terms means we see vibrant colours and dogs see duller and faded colours.

Lets now look at Artificial flavours; Artificial flavours are added to improve the palatability of your dogs food. This though really isn`t necessary if you are buying a premium dog food (which doesn`t need to be expensive). What makes me wonder though is what terrible flavours are they trying to hide??

Next is Artificial preservatives and Oxidants; Oxidants are added to your dogs pet food to keep them on the shelf that little bit longer as the big companies do not want them going off before they sell them. The simple explanation is that when fats come into contact with air they over time become rancid!! Companies have a choice to use "synthetic antioxidants" or natural ones. The natural ones are more time consuming and costly so companies choose to use what we now know as EC permitted antioxidants.

What are EC permitted antioxidants? Firstly we have the well known E320-BHA, E321-BHT and E324. Although extremely effective at their job they do have a serious downside too. It is a well known fact that these permitted antioxidants can cause serious illnesses including cancer. No surprise to learn then that these are regularly used by manufacturers because they are cheap!! There are though very healthy alternatives around if you look carefully-like The Doggy-Deli. We do not use any of these and yes we may not have the same shelf life (4-6 weeks) but we don`t cause Cancer either. We use a secret blend of ingredients including rosemary which is a natural antioxidant.

Organic Explained

With ever increasing health trends we as humans often look at our plate and decide that we need to make changes to either lower cholesterol or the amount of fat we take into our bodies. We though as pet owners sometimes forget that our dog`s bowls/plates also need to be re-tuned at times too. The Doggy-Deli range of organic ingredients used in our dog treats promotes healthy coats, teeth, and muscles and has the potential to increase a dog’s life span and energy. I feel that it is important for all of us "dog owners" to compare dog treats, biscuits and other foods to be sure that we are providing our pets with the best possible nutrition.
To make any comparisons with dog foods, we need to firstly understand the descriptions dog food companies put on their products and their terms of sale.
The foods we produce at The Doggy-Deli are solely made from using Organic Ingredients, thus meaning they are produced without synthetic pesticides or chemical fertilizers and do not use any genetically modified organisms or additives. This allows for the purest produce and meat that is available for consumption.
Some dog food companies have different levels of organic ingredients in their products and are regulated by different countries codes and conditions I.E Dog foods that are marketed as “100% Organic” must contain 100% organically produced ingredients, aside from added water and salt.
Products created by The Doggy-Deli (within the UK) for which we market as “Organic” must contain 95% organic ingredients, aside from water and salt. Any foods that contain less than 95% organic ingredients must state that they are “Made with Organic Ingredients.” We at The Doggy-Deli go above and beyond the 95% requirement by ever only using Organic Ingredients (excluding water and salt).
In conclusion it is important to compare dog food before feeding it to your dog. Whether you decide on organic or high-protein products, the quality of your dog’s food is important. It will extend the life span of your pet; save on vet bills, and makes for a happier, healthy dog.

Tried and Tested

After researching safe "Doggy Chocolate" it became apparent to me how many types of biscuits I could actually do.
We already do the biscuits that are either drizzled or coated with safe "The Doggy-Deli Chocolate" but now dum, dum, dum.......we do gorgeous biscuits that have safe chocolate chips inside too.

I have had many questions asking me "how safe our chocolate actually is" well I can tell you it is 110% safe. It contains NO cocoa solids which causes a number of damaging conditions in dogs and NO sugar.

It is however according to my dog very very tasty. :))))))))

The Doggy-Deli will never change it`s stance on ingredients within our products, a stance we take extremely seriously-thus being we will never use any artificial ingredients within our products. Artificial ingredients, additives, preservatives, e numbers and sugars can all contribute to a number of long term health conditions within dogs.

So for your chance to win a bag of free biscuits (including delivery) please answer the following question;

Where will the 2012 Crufts be held.

A) Birmingham
B) London
C) Glasgow

Please either comment on the blog below with your answer or alternatively you can e-mail me direct at doggydeli@hotmail.com

I am trying Butchers Dried Dog food.

Butcher's brings you New Dry Complete.I personally prefer dried food for my dog as I know it is a lot better for her teeth and gums but also encourages her to drink more water. Another benefit of dried dog food is that it looks more appetizing than a thick cylinder shaped processed tin of "Meat". More water than actual meat.
Meaty meets crunchy with Butchers new dried dog food with selected tasty crunchy pieces for your dog, all with added goodness including: glucosamine to keep joints flexible, natural prebiotics and anti-oxidants to fight off the bad stuff and increase vitality, and other special ingredients to keep bones strong, eyes bright, coats glossy and muscles fit enough for the best of ball-chasing fun.
In the promotional adverts for this new product (why has it taken so long I wonder) Butchers state "They’ll love our meaty food, now made wonderfully, crunchily, dry and complete". Will mine though, a spoilt cross Collie who at the best of times knows what tastes good and know`s what clearly does not.
Looking a bit like Bakers dog food with square pieces of meat amongst other dried pieces of food my dog did what many others do, picked out the meaty chunks first but as I stood there about to rush to the shop to search for an alternative I heard the delightful sound of crunching. I call it delightful as to me crunching and then continued crunching meant taste and enjoyment. Normally I try and mix new food in with previous food to stop any stomach upsets but I did not have any so I was ready for any quick dashes to the back door. Thankfully and I should say not surprisingly Butchers did not and to this day has not caused any stomach upsets and for the squeamish amongst you everything was normal if not better than normal at "Toilet time".

What I do like about Butchers as a company (a lot like my own) is that they use as many natural ingredients as possible stating that all of their products are "Made with natural ingredients"-no artificial colours, flavours or preservatives, even any sea food added to their ingredients is caught by using "Dolphin friendly" techniques and any seafood caught is from sustainable sources and replenished.

Don`t however take my word for it please visit their website http://www.butcherspetcare.com/ for further details. The food is available internationally. Please let me know what YOU THINK by leaving COMMENTS. Thank you.

Please let me know what YOU THINK by leaving COMMENTS. Thank you.

`Tis The Season To Be Jolly tra la la la la.............

When Animal lovers see Chocolate on products they can sometimes presume that makers use harmful ingredients that can in some cases cause either Pancreatitis OR DEATH.

The Doggy-Deli does not and will never use any harmful ingredients in their products whether that be chocolate or sugar. Dogs do not need either added to their diets, although some well known manufacturers may beg to differ.

Our Chocolate coated biscuits use safe Doggy-Deli chocolate amongst other natural ingredients. They have great feedback and are well loved by my dog and others around the world.

Please try our double decker "Safe chocolate" swirled Christmas tree decorations/cookies.

Not forgetting our cookie bag. Each bag contains 20 cookies  from our range of delicious products. We feel that we have created each batch specifically for your dog. We now also include training aids too; when out walking I use mine to reward my dog for following commands and inside as a hide and seek game. Works wonders.

And for those down times after walks and the dinner comes our cupcakes. Low in fat but filled with taste.

So why not put a big smile on your dogs face this Christmas.
